Main factors affecting graphite electrode consumption


The consumption of graphite electrode in electric furnace steelmaking runs through the whole smelting process, and its consumption is affected by many factors. Here, it is only for the operation of a smelting process to analyze.


(I) Poor quality or improper ratio of scrap steel leads to poor slagging effect and prolonged smelting time.


The increase of feeding times and borehole penetration data increases the damage and fracture probability of electrode bottom. The lengthening smelting time is the direct factor leading to the increase of power consumption and electrode consumption and loss.


(2) The electric furnace power supply equipment does not match the electrode specifications and varieties


Electric arc furnace is high current low voltage operation. If the power supply equipment capacity is too large and beyond the electrode limit load, the arc within 5~10min electrode from bottom to top redness phenomenon, the boundary of the connection is very obvious and most of the broken accidents occur; when the current is too high or fluctuates too much, the breaking frequency of the joint at the joint is increased and the consumption at the bottom is cone-tip. If the power supply capacity is low, the furnace temperature cannot meet the process requirements in the effective medium heat time, the operation will be delayed. The loss and consumption of graphite electrode are the greatest in overload and timeout operation.


(3) During the oxidation period, it is compulsory to increase chemical energy and enhance smelting intensity.


Smelting is forced to increase the blowing oxygen (generally less than 45m³/t) in order to achieve rapid melting and improve the furnace temperature, so that the furnace condition is bad and the furnace and the furnace is a rich oxygen state, so that each phase electrode is in the high temperature flame. When the electrode is in this furnace condition, the layer formation and surface oxidation are serious.


(4) Technical configuration and operation of electric furnaces


There are essential differences between modern electric arc furnaces and traditional electric furnaces. The appearance of ultra-high power and large-scale electric arc furnace and hot charging steelmaking process has improved smelting intensity and production capacity, thus putting forward higher technical requirements for the quality of graphite electrode. During the operation, the selection of transmission curve AND gear, the control of arc starting and arc stabilizing voltage and current, the use of long, medium and short arc, and the configuration and application of water cooling system all play a key role in the service life and consumption of electrodes.


(5) Quality of graphite electrodes


At present, the smelting and processing of electric arc furnace require the oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance of graphite electrode more and more strongly, and the high consumption caused by quality fluctuation is greatly concerned by direct users. So the equilibrium and stability of graphite electrode quality is the most important factor to determine the size of consumption.
